Turkey was a regular contestant in the Eurovision Song Contest notching up 27 appearances up until their departure after their last appearance in 2012. They cited disagreements with some of the competition rules including the "Big Five" as the reason for their withdrawing.
More recently the head of the national broadcasting company, the Turkish Radio and Television Corporation (TRT), Ibrahim Eren, has been reported as referring to the contest's 2014 winner Conchita Wurst as inappropriate for broadcasting on television.
According a report in The New Arab Eren said the there were moral concerns about the contest and "We are not thinking about taking part at the moment," he said, “As a public broadcaster we cannot broadcast live at 9pm, when children are watching, an Austrian with a beard and a skirt, who claims not to have a gender and says 'I am a man and a woman at the same time'"
