The mother of a teenager who killed himself after he was bullied for being gay has used a Birmingham teachers' conference to advocate for LGBT school lessons.
Pat Sowa’s son, Dom, took his own life in 2017. The Times reports that, speaking at the Association of School & College Leaders’ annual conference at the International Convention Centre, Ms Sowa said that children should be taught about LGBT issues in primary schools, and that society must be cautious about thinking it had cracked the problem of homophobia.
Ms Sowa’s Birmingham-conference comments come in the wake of controversy at one of the city’s primary schools, Parkfield Community School in Saltley, where a number of parents have protested against the teaching of LGBT lessons.
