Birmingham LGBT’s Ageing With Pride campaign has come to an end.
A special event at the city’s Mockingbird Cinema & Kitchen earlier this week marked the completion of the 12-month initiative, which has challenged ageism, confronted over-50s’ isolation and promoted inclusivity of all LGBT people, regardless of age.
The Mockingbird get-together featured food, entertainment, a screening of the Ageing With Pride short film, An Unbreakable Generation, and an open discussion on what ‘ageing with pride’ means to members of the LGBT community.
Commenting on the campaign, its coordinator, Rico Johnson-Sinclair, said: “There’s so much more to do. Ageing With Pride has started the conversation; it now needs to be carried forward by members of the LGBTQ+ community here in Birmingham and the businesses that flourish here because of LGBTQ+ people.
"If you run a bar, ask yourself, is this place inclusive of older LGBTQ+ people? If you manage a community group, be concerned about those at risk of isolation within your group. If somebody goes off the radar for a while, call them! There’s so much we can all do.”
