Frankie Goes To Hollywood’s Relax has been named the 13th greatest UK number one.
The hit 1984 record features at 13th in the Guardian’s list of the 100 greatest UK number one singles.
Reviewing the song, the Guardian said: “With not only its flagrant innuendo but its wide-open synths and swooning, psychedelic disco structure, the song was a complete wildcard - and the band performing it even more so.
“Frontmen Holly Johnson and Paul Rutherford were both openly gay, still a rarity in pop at the time, and courted controversy with the use of fetish wear in their performances and videos.”
Relax hit top spot after BBC Radio One breakfast DJ Mike Read refused to play the track due to its lewd lyrics. The BBC supported his decision and banned it from all of its shows, including Top Of The Pops.
Within weeks, Relax topped the UK charts, staying at number one for five weeks. The single remains the sixth bestselling in British history.
