BBC research has revealed that over 2,000 transgender and non-binary adults are on the waiting list at Nottinghamshire’s NHS gender identity clinic.
Only London’s Tavistock and Portman has a longer list.
In total there are more than 13,500 people on waiting lists for England’s seven clinics, with some people having had to wait three years for their first appointment.
The research shows that nationwide there has been a 40% increase in referrals over the past four years.
NHS England has said that it intends to bring down waiting times to below 18 weeks. The average time to wait for a first appointment at a gender identity clinic is one-and-a-half years.
The role of gender identity clinics is to offer people aged 18-plus assessment and support with gender dysphoria, a condition which causes a person to experience discomfort or distress as a result of a mismatch between their biological sex and gender identity.
The clinics offer services including hormone treatment, facial hair removal, genital hair removal prior to surgery, voice coaching, speech & language therapy and psychological support.
