Critically acclaimed gay film God’s Own Country has been ‘censored’ on Amazon Prime Video, according to the movie’s director, Francis Lee.
In a tweet, Lee said: “God’s Own Country appears to have been censored on @PrimeVideo (Amazon Prime).
“Until this is investigated please do not rent or buy on Amazon Prime. It is not the film I intended or made. I will report back.”
The film tells the story of a young farmer who embarks on a relationship with a Romanian migrant worker.
Lee’s twitter followers came out in support of his claim. One wrote: “The one that you can stream for free if you have Prime has been censored - which annoyed me - but if you buy it via Prime Video (as I did) then it hasn’t.
"They cut most of the scene in the cattle trailer with Johnny and the trainee auctioneer and same for the scene in the mud. I stopped watching after that because it was bugging me they’d done that, so I don’t know if anything else was censored.”
Another wrote: “I noticed the edits when it premiered on Prime and even bought it on iTunes to see if I was right about it being edited. It’s a shame they chose to alter it.”
Released in 2017, God’s Own Country was nominated for a Bafta in the ‘outstanding British film of the year’ category.
