In a story which has some similarities to that of Roy and Silo, the famous chinstrap penguins of Central Park Zoo who raised a chick after the zookeeper gave them an egg to hatch, two gay male emperor penguins in Berlin Zoo are set to become parents.
After Skipper and Ping, both aged 10, had been observed trying to hatch stones and fish, zoo staff gave the pair an egg which had been abandoned by its mother.
Zoo keeper Norbert Zahmel explained: “We just had to put it in front of one of the males. He immediately knew what to do.
“This is the first time we have tried to have a same-sex penguin couple incubate an egg.
“Both are looking after the egg in an exemplary manner.”
According to Germany's public international broadcaster, Deutsche Welle, research shows that approximately 1,500 animal species are known to practise same-sex coupling, including birds, mammals, insect and fish.
