Shrewsbury’s Unitarian church has recently become licensed to hold ceremonies for the solemnisation of marriage for same-sex couples.

The church, which is the first in the area to hold this licence, is situated in the heart of Shrewsbury’s historic town centre. With its big red doors it is easy to find just along the High Street from The Square. Unitarianism and the church building have a long history in the town.

Unitarianism is a free and questioning faith evolved from the traditional Judaeo Christian belief. While some Unitarians consider themselves to be liberal Christians, others find their focus within other spiritual paths. Everyone, of any faith or none is welcome.

Unitarians share a passionate concern for social justice and have campaigned alongside other groups to unite people in fellowship, and as far back as 1977, the General Assembly of Unitarians and Free Christian Churches resolved that the ministry should be open to all regardless of sex, race, colour or sexual orientation.

It is therefore not at all surprising that all members of the LGBT community are made welcome at the weekly services held each Sunday morning at 10:30am and if any couples looking to marry in church would like to know more are asked to email shrewsburyunitarians@gmail.com or contact Fiona on 07487 531913.
