The writer/director of the movie Boy Erased has said that he hopes the practice of gay conversion therapy will soon be a thing of the past.

Speaking on the eve of the release of his film, which stars Nicole Kidman & Russell Crowe and tells the true story of author Garrard Conley’s experience of the gay conversion programme, Joel Edgerton told BBC News: “My greatest hope is that this film is redundant as soon as possible. Whatever we can do to end conversion therapy. But in the meantime, it's a great movie for parents who are dealing with anything akin to what Garrard's parents are dealing with."

Boy Erased is released nationwide in cinemas tomorrow, Friday 8 February.
