Leader of the House of Commons Andrea Leadsom has said that she believes parents should have a right to choose the age at which their children are “exposed” to LGBT-inclusive sex & relationship education.
Speaking to LBC Radio about the issue following the decision of several Birmingham schools to stop teaching LGBT rights lessons, the Conservative MP for South Northamptonshire, who abstained on the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act in 2013, said: "It's absolutely vital that children grow up understanding the society that they live in and do grow up tolerant and seeking equality and respecting differences.”
She went on to say: “But at the same time I would also agree that it's right that parents should be able to choose the moment at which their children become exposed to that information, and that there are steps taken to enable parents to withdraw their children from classes up until a certain age."
She added: "I think it is the case that you have to allow parents to choose to withdraw their children up to a certain age, but at the same time, in order to have an equal society, there comes a point where children do need to understand the social norms around them."
