Anderton Park primary school has closed early amid fears of a ‘mass protest’ against LGBT lessons by parents and other demonstrators.
The protest is scheduled to take place at 2.30 this afternoon.
One of the schools at the centre of the ongoing row over the teaching of lessons about same-sex relationships, Anderton Park shut at midday, with police in place outside the gates.
According to BirminghamLive, council officials are considering applying for a high court injunction to end the “nuisance, harassment and unacceptable behaviour” of protesters.
Speaking to the Birmingham Mail about the decision to close the school early today, city leader Councillor Ian Ward said: “I support the extremely difficult decision that has been taken to close Anderton Park School at lunchtime.
"This decision was not taken lightly but protests outside the school have escalated significantly over the past week and our first priority must always be the safety of pupils, families and staff.
“Birmingham City Council is continuing to work with the police to ensure measures are put in place to support the Anderton Park community when school reopens on Monday 3 June, and I urge parents to engage with the school if they have concerns about equalities education.
“The staff and pupils of Anderton Park have shown remarkable resilience in the face of increasingly unpleasant protests over recent weeks. I would like to thank [headteacher] Sarah Hewitt-Clarkson and all the school staff for their hard work and wish them a relaxing half-term break.”
