Sun, sea, sand and other things beginning with ‘S’...

Sun, sea, sand and other things beginning with ‘S’... Benidorm Live whisks you away from the gloomy winter weather and hits you with a camp splash of summer.

Many beloved television shows are getting a new lease of life nowadays. Indeed, one of them, The League Of Gentlemen, live on stage, stars Benidorm’s very own Steve Pemberton. Although Pemberton’s Mick and the rest of the Garvey family are missing from the poolside in this live version of the long-running ITV hit, all the show’s larger-than-life characters are present and correct to carry the spirit of the television series.

Mateo (Jake Canuso) is as sleazily charming as ever, Jacqueline (Janine Duvtiski) preys on new holidaymakers, and Sam (Shelly Longworth) and Joyce (Sherrie Hewson) fend off a possible closure of the Solana. Stealing the show are hairdressing duo Liam (Adam Gillen) and Kenneth (Tony Maudsley), along with the character of Gay Derek, who’s played by Benidorm’s creator and writer, Derren Litten.

Smooth musical numbers add a nice element to the stage version, with a tight and talented chorus dancing their way through the scene transitions across a fantastic revolving set. With the audience offered a ‘return to Solana next year’ and the show being adapted by the FOX television network for America, it looks like it will be a good while yet before last orders are called at the Neptune Bar.
