Let's talk: Coming out and understanding the lingo...
Posted on 26 Jul 2019

Hello, I’m Lacey and I’m pansexual.

Growing up, I knew there was something a bit different about me when compared to my friends and peers. I think we all felt that disconnect. I’ve always been queer - in how I think, dress and what I’ve generally been drawn to.

With little to no conversation around LGBT+ topics taking place when my friends and I were growing up, most of us didn’t have a clue what was going on. Sexuality is a huge part of a person’s identity, and we need to be able to understand who we are. It’s only then that we can be true to ourselves and live life to the full.

In two relationships with men, I had to try and understand my sexuality. It was hard. I couldn’t fully work out who I was.

The last few years have seen a great leap forward in terms of conversations around LGBT+ issues. Education about and understanding of the different sexualities, genders and identities that make up our ever-inclusive initialism has improved. Many people don’t need a label, but for some there is great comfort in knowing that they fall into the same category as others. It can really help people understand not only themselves but the world around them and the community to which they belong.
In order to bridge gaps between people, we need to understand and educate ourselves about differences. I hope the list of definitions on the opposite page helps... I’ve brushed up on a few of them myself!

Lots of Love, Lacey x

The LGBTQ+ Lingo...

ASEXUAL - Someone without sexual feelings or associations.

BISEXUAL - Someone who experiences attraction to people of their gender and another gender. Bisexual attraction does not have to be equally split, nor indicate a level of interest that is the same across the genders to which an individual may be attracted.

CISGENDER OR CIS - Someone whose gender identity is the same as the sex they were assigned at birth.

GAY - The term gay refers to a man who has a romantic and/or sexual orientation towards men. It is also considered a generic term for lesbian and gay sexuality - some women define themselves as gay rather than lesbian.

INTERSEX - A term used to describe a person who may have the biological attributes of both sexes, or whose biological attributes do not fit with societal assumptions about what constitutes male or female.
Intersex people may identify as male, female or non-binary (see below).

LESBIAN - Refers to a woman who has a romantic and/or sexual orientation towards women.

NON-BINARY -  An umbrella term for people whose gender identity doesn’t sit comfortably with ‘man’ or ‘woman’. Non-binary identities are varied and can include people who identify with some aspects of binary identities and people who reject them entirely.

PANSEXUAL - Refers to a person whose romantic and/or sexual attraction towards others is not limited by sex or gender.

QUEER - Queer is a term used by those wanting to reject specific labels of romantic orientation, sexual orientation and/or gender identity. It can also be a way of rejecting the perceived norms of the LGBT community (racism, sizeism, ableism etc). Although some LGBT people view the word as a slur, it was reclaimed and embraced by the queer community in the late 1980s.

QUESTIONING - The process of exploring your own sexual orientation and/or gender identity.

QPOC/QTPOC - Initialisms that stand for queer people of colour and queer and/or trans people of colour.

TRANSGENDER - An umbrella term to describe people whose gender is not the same as, or does not sit comfortably with, the sex they were assigned at birth.
