Gay club buys Angels and is set to spend up to £300k
POSTED: Mon 25 January 2010 One of the city’s biggest nightclubs has taken over the lease of troubled neighbouring Birmingham Gay Village venue Angels Cafe Bar.
The Nightingale’s Chairman Garry Baker exclusively confirmed to Midlands Zone that the gay club has bought the Angels Cafe Bar lease off Pat Lilley, the current lease-holder, and is now intending to spend around £250,000 to £300,000 on upgrading the venue over the course of the next ten weeks or so. Mr Baker also revealed that ‘when the venue reopens, it will have a new name, an upmarket continental vibe, and will also serve Italian or tapas-style food’.
Garry Baker told Zone: “We are delighted to be taking on the challenge of completely transforming Angels. It’s evident it needs a substantial investment but we think it’s definitely worth it.”
But not everyone is happy with the decision, which will now force the Devil’s Cafe part of Angels to close down. Devil’s Cafe owner Graham Littlewood commented: “I was completely shocked by the announcement, especially as I was also already in discussions with Pat Lilley about taking over the whole venue myself.”
Mr Littlewood has already announced that Devil’s Cafe will close in the near future.
