The scandal in which it was revealed that Northern Ireland MP Iris Robinson had solicited loans for her 19-year-old lover has now been followed by Mrs Robinson's resignation from Westminster.

It had been expected that Robinson would stay on as MP for Strangford until May, but a statement from the Treasury confirmed that she had left.

Robinson was recently expelled from the Democratic Unionist Party and has also stood down as an Assembly member. She is thought to be receiving psychiatric treatment in a Belfast hospital.
